Back to | October 2025 Italian and international wine: what happened

October 2025 marked a significant turning point for Italian and international wine, between industry reports, new market balances, leadership changes, and strategic choices anticipating 2026. Center stage was the Winemag Guide 2026, which established “Authenticity” as the keyword of the year, rewarding wineries and territories capable of interpreting identity, production consistency, and vision.

WINEMAG GUIDE 2026 AND AWARD-WINNING WINERIES

MARKETS, FAIRS, AND PROSPECTS FOR ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL DENOMINATIONS

On the international front, ProWein Düsseldorf looks to 2026 with a new structure. A format announced as more agile and essential and new management entrusted to Frank Schindler. In the United States, Prosecco surpasses Champagne, reaching a value of about half a billion dollars, while in Italy there is reflection on the progressive democratization of Champagne and increasingly widespread consumption, also celebrated by Champagne Day 2025, between unconventional pairings and targeted selections.

The Langhe register a new record with Barolo en Primeur 2025, which exceeds one million euros at auction. In Burgundy, the wine market experiences a slowdown phase that opens new opportunities for producers and investors. Meanwhile, the sparkling segment observes the evolution of no and low alcohol wines, now a structural part of the global market.

FOCUS ON CONSORTIA, REGULATIONS, AND ILLEGAL LABOR IN VINEYARDS

October was also a key month for consortia and denominations. The Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino obtained recognition from MASAF. Vernaccia di San Gimignano confirms Manrico Biagini as president. In Monferrato, the Consorzio Nizza Docg project takes shape, marking an internal split over Barbera as a tool for distinction.

In Friuli Venezia Giulia, Collio Evolution 2025 showed confidence in Nomisma data on wine and wine tourism, but also tensions. Turning point on the Friulano issue and absence of the Produttori di Cormòns cooperative. In Lombardy, Oltrepò Pavese faces a critical phase between betting on Pinot Nero Classese and reflections on TEA as a possible agronomic solution. Also emerging is illegal labor in the vineyards of Prosecco Docg di Valdobbiadene.

The Garda Doc regulations are updated to include Cremant, low alcohol, Müller Thurgau, and Rebo. Etna Docg enters the final phase of recognition: 60 days and 100 signatures for MASAF approval. In Prepotto, Schioppettino attempts a new relaunch. While in Montefalco, Anteprima 2025 highlights the best expressions of Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino.

COMPANIES, MANAGERS, AND STRATEGIES

On the business front, Pasqua Vini invests in Pantelleria with Carole Bouquet and appoints Andrea Pasqua as Business Development manager. Balan becomes the new distributor of Masseria Li Veli. Pala inaugurates a new phase with management led by the Tolaini family. Antonio Spurio is the new director of Cantina di Pitigliano, in Tuscany.

In the Champagne world, Ruinart entrusts the management of the cellars to Caroline Fiot. While Bruno Paillard celebrates 40 years of Riserva Perpetua as the maison’s liquid archive. Sarah Harrison is appointed Executive Director of the Institute of Masters of Wine.

VISIONS, CRITICAL ISSUES, AND NARRATIVES

The month closes with broader reflections on the relationship between wine and luxury, between showcase investments and real economic solidity. And a Winemag portrait of Maurizio Zanella (Cà del Bosco), which spans Franciacorta and Lambrusco dreams. A dense October, which captures a sector in transformation. Suspended between identity, market, and choices that will weigh on the immediate future of wine.
