Burgundy: Wine Market Between Slowdown and Opportunity

IN BREVE
  • Despite an unstable economic climate, Burgundy wines are showing resilience, with a harvest of over 1.2 million hectoliters for the 2024-2025 campaign.
  • The 2024 vintage led to a slowdown in sales, while exports continued to grow, reaching over 57 million bottles.
  • Domestic consumption remains stable, with an increase in supermarket volumes and growth for Crémant de Bourgogne.
  • Despite tariff tensions, sales to the United States increased by 22.5% thanks to targeted strategies.
  • Key export markets include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Belgium, with recent growth in Sweden.

The wines of Burgundy confirm their resilience despite an unstable international economic context and a decrease in global demand. The 2024-2025 campaign recorded a harvest slightly above 1.2 million hectoliters, equivalent to over 161 million bottles, the second lowest in the last 15 years after 2021. Following two abundant vintages in 2022 and 2023, stocks are sufficient to meet demand, while exports continue to show dynamism.

THE 2024-2025 CAMPAIGN AND THE 2023 VINTAGE: STOCKS ON THE RISE

The 2024 vintage, with its reduced volume, resulted in a slowdown in sales compared to previous campaigns. Bottled releases from estates saw a 2% increase compared to the 2023-2024 campaign, while “raisin & moût” (grape and must) releases followed the harvest decrease (-36.6%), representing 29% of total volumes. Despite a 14.8% decrease in estate-held stock compared to 2024, inventories remain above the five-year average (+5.9%). Including merchant volumes, total Burgundy stock in July 2025 is up 6.1% compared to the average of the previous five campaigns.

FEWER BULK WINE TRANSACTIONS

Bulk wine transactions decreased due to the limited harvest, reaching 730,000 hl, with only 77% relating to the 2024 vintage. The 2023 vintage saw a ten-year record level, accounting for 40% of the total, due to the need to compensate for lower 2024 quantities and the significant availability of 2023 VCI, especially for Chablis, Mâcon, and Bourgogne.

FRENCH DOMESTIC MARKET

Domestic consumption of Burgundy wines remains stable among social categories with still-consistent purchasing power. In large-scale retail, volumes increased by 0.7% and turnover by 0.4% (first 8 months of 2025 vs 2024). This result is supported by brands (+3.2% in volume) and private labels (+2% in volume), with purchases made below the average price. Among the most prominent AOCs are Bourgogne blanc, Chablis, and Petit Chablis. Crémant de Bourgogne recorded growth in both volume (+3.7%) and turnover (+4.6%).

EXPORTS: GROWTH DESPITE TENSIONS

In the first seven months of 2025, Burgundy exported over 57 million bottles (+5.6%), with a record turnover of 951 million euros (+2.7%). The positive trend mainly concerns AOC Bourgogne blanc (+7.2% in volume), Chablis (+9.5%), and Mâcon blanc (+10%). Crémant de Bourgogne grew by 9.5% in volume. The main markets remain the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Belgium, with recent shifts such as Sweden entering fourth place and Japan exiting the top rankings.

MARKET DIVERSIFICATION

Tariff tensions, particularly in the USA, are influencing exports. Despite the new 15% tax, sales to the United States remain strong (+22.5%). The United Kingdom remains the second-largest market, while operators seek to develop new markets with growth potential. The Chablis and Bourgogne AOCs, as well as Mâcon, have partially offset declines in some traditional markets through targeted exports to the USA, Canada, and Sweden.
