Best wines of Mallorca: PGI Mallorca scores – Vi de La Terra (Mallorca, Balearic Islands)

Four wines share the top of the ranking of the best PGI Mallorca wines, all with 92 points. They are Blanc de Mantonegro 2025 by 7103 Petit Celler, Sauvignon Blanc 2025 by Macià Batle, Atrevido 2023 by Oloron, and Gran Selección Chardonnay Premsal Blanc, also by Macià Batle.

The PGI Mallorca, known through the traditional mention Vi de la Terra Mallorca, was the most represented label in Winemag’s exclusive tasting. Of the 139 samples presented, 91 belonged to the geographical indication and 90 received a score. The average was 88.64/100, with 26 wines – 28.9% – rated at least 90 points.

The PGI covers the entire territory of Mallorca and allows for the production of white, rosé, and red wines using grapes grown on the island. Processing and bottling must also take place within the delimited area. This geographical extension distinguishes Vi de la Terra Mallorca from the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant DOs, which are restricted to specific groups of municipalities.

According to the Regulatory Council, at the 2025 harvest, 330 winegrowers, 84 wineries, and 1,923 hectares in production were registered. Volumes also confirm the weight of the PGI: official data from the Government of the Balearic Islands indicate 30,293 hectoliters marketed in 2025. More than double the 13,516 hectoliters reached collectively by the two Mallorcan designations of origin.

Vi de la Terra Mallorca thus represented 69.1% of the wine marketed by the island’s three main labels. Compared to 2024, overall sales decreased by 1.7%, but the domestic market recorded a growth of 9.1%.

The PGI Mallorca regulations authorize a broader ampelographic platform compared to the two DOs. Local varieties include Callet, Manto Negro, Fogoneu, and Gorgollassa for reds; Prensal Blanc, Giró Ros, and Malvasia aromatica for whites.

These are joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Monastrell, Tempranillo, and Pinot Noir, as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling, Macabeo, Parellada, and Muscat. The PGI does not impose minimum percentages of indigenous varieties in blends: it therefore allows wineries to interpret territories and grape varieties with greater freedom.

This openness has not prevented Mallorcan grapes from taking on a growing role. Manto Negro appears in 41 of the wines presented to Winemag, ahead of Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the tasting, it emerges both in light and contemporary versions, focused on fruit, pepper, and Mediterranean herbs, and in more mature and structured reds.

The extension to the entire island introduces significant differences between Raiguer, Serra de Tramuntana, Pla, Llevant, Migjorn, and the Palma area. Altitude, exposure, and distance from the sea modify ripening, water availability, and temperature range, giving rise to wines that are difficult to trace back to a single model.

The soils are predominantly calcareous, often clay-loam and rich in carbonates. The Mediterranean climate has an average annual temperature of about 17 degrees, 427 millimeters of rain, and 2,800 hours of sunshine. Limited rainfall during the summer causes water stress and favors the concentration of the grapes, while the marine influence contains the most extreme temperature fluctuations.

The four 92-point wines show the variety of interpretations allowed by the PGI. Blanc de Mantonegro 2025 by 7103 Petit Celler combines citrus, Mediterranean scrub, fruit, and sapidity. The Sauvignon Blanc 2025 by Macià Batle focuses on maturity, volume, and roundness. Atrevido 2023 by Oloron, a pure Chardonnay, pairs minerality and salt with a precise use of wood. Gran Selección Chardonnay Premsal Blanc by Macià Batle closes with yellow and exotic fruit, freshness, and citrus hints.

Five wines follow at 91 points: Tianna Organic Rosé 2025 and Bocchoris Blanc 2025 by Tianna Negre, Terra Manto by Karretania, Margalida Llompart by Macià Batle, and Camins de Son Antem Negre 2025. Overall, fruit recurs in more than half of the tasting notes, followed by sapidity, freshness, and drinkability.
