Raf 110 2022 from Vins Nadal, with 96 points, leads the ranking of the best wines of Majorca from Winemag’s exclusive tasting. Behind it, with 95 points, is Supernova Negre 2025 from Can Verdura Viticultors. Both are produced with Manto Negro and belong to DO Binissalem, one of the two denominations of origin in Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands.
The DO was represented by 12 of the 139 wines tasted. A small sample, which suggests caution in statistical comparisons, but from which come the two highest scores of the entire session. The average is 89.17/100, with four labels scoring at least 90 points.
DO BINISSALEM: TERRITORY, CLIMATE AND SOILS
Recognized in 1990, DO Binissalem includes the municipalities of Binissalem, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Sencelles and Santa Eugènia. The production area occupies the central sector of Majorca, on a plain that develops mainly between 70 and 140 meters of altitude, protected to the north by the Serra de Tramuntana.
The vineyards rest mainly on Calcisols and calcareous Luvisols, soils of moderate fertility in which gravel and stones abound. These elements limit the vigor of the vine and the capacity to retain water in the surface layers. Deeper down, the conglomerate instead constitutes a water reserve accessible to the roots during summer.
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Precipitation averages 550 millimeters per year and is concentrated mainly in autumn, while sunshine is around 2,750 hours. The proximity of the Serra de Tramuntana also reduces exposure to cold northern winds and frost.
MANTO NEGRO AND PRENSAL BLANC, THE GRAPES OF DO BINISSALEM
The identity of Binissalem wines does not derive from the exclusion of international varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay are permitted by the regulations alongside Majorcan grapes. The difference lies in the composition requirements: in reds Manto Negro must represent at least 30% of the blend, while in whites at least 50% must come from Moll-Prensal Blanc or Moscato varieties.
Manto Negro tends to express ripe fruit, pomegranate, carob and vegetal nuances. Moll-Prensal Blanc moves between apple, quince, white fruit and hints of anise. Giró Ros expands the register with stone fruit, tropical notes and honey, while Gorgollassa brings spices and balsamic accents. Callet contributes with generally lighter, floral profiles with little chromatic concentration.
From 2026 the optional designation “Vinyet” strengthens the connection with the territory. It can be used for wines obtained from at least 85% local varieties or Moscato, from vineyards of at least twenty years and hand-harvested. Lower yields and more restrictive thresholds for sulfur dioxide are also required.
THE SCORES OF THE BEST DO BINISSALEM WINES
Seven of the 12 wines tasted contain Manto Negro. In addition to Raf 110 and Supernova Negre, Negre 110 2025 from Vins Nadal also reaches 90 points, a red with a mineral profile, fine tannin and good aging prospects.
Among the whites, Pedra Blanc Biologico 2025 from Bodegas José L. Ferrer obtains the same score thanks to a citrusy, savory and mineral expression of Moll-Prensal Blanc and Giró Ros. The following table reports all DO Binissalem wines tasted by Winemag, with producer, vintage, varieties and score.
