IN BREVE
- The 2026 harvest in Germany has started early, and picking is already underway at many wineries.
- High summer temperatures have accelerated grape ripening, especially for white wines.
- Producers must monitor sugar and acidity levels to choose the ideal harvest date.
- Expectations are positive for quality, but yields could be below average due to drought.
- The main harvest will get into full swing in early September, and a quick vintage is expected.
The 2026 harvest has begun in Germany with exceptional earliness. Following the very early start of picking for grapes destined for Federweißer, the German new wine, the main harvest has also already started in most wineries.
The most significant data point of the vintage is the speed of grape ripening. High summer temperatures have accelerated the process in all the country’s main wine-growing areas. Picking is already underway from Saxony to Lake Constance.
The widespread start of the harvest is expected in the first week of September. For most wineries, this is an unprecedentedly early start.
RAPID RIPENING IN ALL REGIONS
The 2026 harvest could proceed very quickly and conclude earlier than average. Almost all varieties are reaching maturity during the same period.
Winegrowers are monitoring not only sugar levels but also acidity. This parameter will be decisive, especially for grapes destined for white wines. A too-sharp drop in acidity could compromise the characteristic freshness of this style.
The speed of ripening therefore makes the choice of harvest date particularly important. Producers must identify the most suitable moment by considering the balance between sugar, acidity, and the health of the grapes.
GRAPE QUALITY HIGH, BUT YIELDS DOWN
Initial assessments from German winegrowers are positive regarding the quality and health of the harvest. Expectations are for aromatic white wines and deep-colored red wines.
However, yields are expected to be lower than average. This is due to prolonged drought conditions, which favored the development of smaller-than-normal berries.
The picture of the vintage thus presents a varied situation: on one hand, very early ripening and grapes considered healthy and of good quality; on the other, a forecast of lower-than-average quantities.
WEATHER DECISIVE FOR THE 2026 HARVEST
In the coming weeks, German producers hope for predominantly dry conditions. Any significant rainfall could further accelerate ripening and make an already early harvest even faster.
The main harvest should therefore get into full swing in the first days of September, with potentially very concentrated timing across different varieties and Germany’s various wine regions.
