The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry has officially recognized the Consorzio di Tutela del Vermouth di Torino, marking a historic milestone for the promotion and protection of the renowned Piedmontese aromatized wine. The institutional recognition grants the Consortium full powers to defend the PGI Vermouth/Vermut di Torino designation, the only PGI recognized in Italy for a vermouth.

Minister Francesco Lollobrigida emphasized that the measure “confirms the institutional commitment to protect and promote local productions, strengthening a Geographical Indications system worth over 20 billion euros in production and representing 16% of Italian agri-food exports.”

PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF THE DESIGNATION

The recognition grants the Consortium the role of guarantor of the authenticity of Vermouth di Torino, ensuring that the designation is used correctly and not in a misleading manner. The Consortium will thus be able to combat counterfeiting, unfair competition and improper use of the name, protecting both producers and consumers. Beyond legal protection, the Consortium will have a key role in promoting and enhancing PGI production through national and international initiatives already launched in recent years.

THE JOURNEY AND THE PROTAGONISTS

Obtaining recognition is the result of a long journey led by Roberto Bava, president of the Consortium from its inception until October 3, and director Pierstefano Berta, with the support of Federvini and its director Gabriele Castelli.

The Consortium is now chaired by Bruno Malavasi, supported by vice presidents Roberto Bava and Giorgio Castagnotti. It represents a diverse supply chain, comprising multinationals, medium and small enterprises, historic companies and new ventures, as well as operators in the aromatic herbs sector. A system that combines tradition and innovation, with the goal of defending an economic and cultural heritage rooted in the Piedmont region.

PRESIDENT MALAVASI’S WORDS

“We welcome with great satisfaction the recognition of the Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino which, as rightly highlighted in the MASAF statement, represents the first aromatized wine to obtain protection at this level – declared president Bruno Malavasi -. It is right to acknowledge the merit of this fundamental result to the great work done in recent years by past-president Roberto Bava and director Pierstefano Berta. An added incentive for all of us in this new phase of growth.”

With ministerial recognition, the Consorzio di Tutela del Vermouth di Torino thus becomes the custodian and guarantor of a cultural, social and economic heritage that originates in Piedmont and speaks to the world.
