Best Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino | Preview A Montefalco 2025

A Montefalco 2025, an event organized by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco, offered an insight into the wine heritage and enological identity of the Montefalco and Spoleto territories. “The evaluation of the 2021 vintage and the success of the A Montefalco 2025 edition – states Paolo Bartoloni, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco – confirm how much our territory continues to express excellence and identity.”

“Montefalco Sagrantino and, in general, the wines of the Montefalco and Spoleto denominations – he adds – are proving more and more to be wines capable of telling the story of the most authentic and profound Umbria. This is thanks to the extraordinary work of the producers and the strength of the bond with the territory of origin. We are proud of the level achieved and ready to continue this path of enhancement, with our eyes on the future.”

The 2021 vintage of Montefalco Sagrantino Docg is defined as “excellent, characterized by healthy and balanced grapes, with significant polyphenolic extraction, precise tannins and a pronounced fruity expressiveness. The climatic trend, complex but favorable, guaranteed structure and acidity.” Words from the Consortium that are confirmed in the tastings.
The 14 samples presented in the blind tasting tell of an orderly and precise vintage.

Juicy wines in which, on average, fresh, “young” fruity notes prevail, and a not excessive use of wood. Intense, lively, vibrant tannin. Wines that speak of longevity, more suited to aging than to short-term consumption. Completely analogous considerations for the “Passito” version. Only three samples presented, all fresh, full of fruit, balanced in sweetness and destined to offer great pleasure both in tasting and at the table.

Umbria is increasingly less red (enologically speaking). While the Doc Montefalco Rosso, Rosso Riserva and Sagrantino Docg cover over 70% of the samples present in the tasting, as is right for a region with a red wine vocation, the whites show great momentum. Freshness and immediacy for Grechetto. But it is Trebbiano Spoletino, both pure and within Montefalco Bianco Doc, that shows the great potential of white Umbria (if there were still any need).

Among the proposals from the Consortium is also a “contemporary” reading of Montefalco Sagrantino. A reading perhaps a bit forced. Sagrantino is by nature a powerful grape variety (and wine), full-bodied and tannic. The oak aging required by the regulations, on the one hand smooths out some edges, on the other only makes the wine more complex.

What if the contemporaneity of Umbria resided rather in its whites? First among all Trebbiano Spoletino. A full-bodied white wine, suitable for aging but also for vintage drinking. Fresh, savory, structured, territorial. Also an authentic expression of the territory between Montefalco and Spoleto but which carries within itself, by its nature, those characteristics so dear to “contemporaneity.” A grape variety that also has something to say about the Metodo Classico version (another contemporary must).

The 2021 vintage confirms on tasting the presentation made by the consortium. Wines with full and rich fruit, great freshness and sometimes slightly rough but intriguing tannins. A vintage that smells of longevity.

Vintages from 2023 to 2019 present. A red that confirms its great potential not only as the “younger brother” of Sagrantino. The use of international grape varieties (though between supporters and opponents) mitigates the arrogance of Sagrantino. But it is Sangiovese that is in great form, giving, to varying degrees, a fresh and full drinking experience.
