  • The recognition represents a new beginning for Grappa, promoting the value and image of the spirit in Italy and abroad.
  • The Geographical Indications system in Italy is worth over 20 billion euros, with the National Grappa Consortium strengthening the position of Italian spirits.

With the publication in the Official Gazette of the decree from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, the National Grappa Consortium obtains official recognition. It is the first concrete step toward structured protection and unified enhancement of the distillate symbol of Made in Italy, which thus enters fully into the system of recognized protection consortia, on par with wines and protected food specialties. The milestone marks a turning point for the sector, which can now count on a representative body to promote, defend and develop the image of Grappa in Italy and abroad.

GROWING EXPORTS AND STRATEGIC MARKETS

The recognition comes during a particularly vibrant phase for the sector. In the first seven months of 2025, Grappa exports reached approximately 19 million euros, with volume growth of +2%. While remaining a niche in the Italian spirits landscape, the distillate confirms its identity relevance. Germany remains the main reference market, with over 50% of total exports (approximately 10 million euros), followed by Switzerland, Austria and the United States. The USA in particular shows a 64% increase, a figure that also reflects the impact of recent customs and import policies. Overall, Italian spirits exports have tripled in the last decade: from just over 1 billion euros in 2014 to over 3 billion in 2024, with growth of +187%.

CAFFO: “A NEW SEASON FOR GRAPPA”

“The long journey that led us to this result was not simple, and for this reason I wish to thank AssoDistil, which believed in the project from the beginning, and all the producers, starting from the Consortium founders to the members who gradually joined us – declares Nuccio Caffo, president of the National Grappa Consortium –. This recognition marks the beginning of a new season for Grappa: a milestone that rewards the work done so far and must be a stimulus to continue growing, together, with even more determination. Grappa, an expression of Italian tradition and craftsmanship, finds in the Consortium the tool to protect and promote its value in Italy and worldwide.”

ASSODISTIL: “A REGULATORY GAP FILLED”

Satisfaction also from AssoDistil. Cesare Mazzetti, president of the association’s National Committee for Spirits and Liqueurs, comments: “The ministerial decree finally fills a regulatory gap and places the sector on a level of equal standing with other GI sectors, in line with the new European Geographical Indications Reform. Protection consortia have already proven to be an extraordinary vehicle for the success of Italian agri-food and wine productions, and now spirits with Geographical Indications can also count on an effective representation and promotion tool,” adds Mazzetti.

A DISTILLATE AT THE HEART OF THE GI SYSTEM

The Geographical Indications system in Italy is worth over 20 billion euros in production and represents 16% of national agri-food exports, equal to over 11.8 billion euros. Within this context, the recognition of the National Grappa Consortium strengthens the position of Italian spirits in the quality production landscape, opening a new season of protection, innovation and internationalization for the only 100% Italian distillate.
