March 5 marks the first International Grappa Day. The occasion shines a spotlight on one of Italy’s iconic spirits and its production chain. Among the key players is the Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino, which represents nearly all provincial production.
The occasion draws attention to a product born from pomace and shaped by the work of distillers. A spirit tied to the territory and its history. In this context, Grappa del Trentino IG is highlighted as an example of quality and protection.
“Grappa del Trentino IG represents much more than a product; it’s the result of a deep connection with the territory, with its raw materials—the pomace—with skills passed down over time, and with rigorous production regulations designed to guarantee transparency, traceability, and high quality standards,” explains Alessandro Marzadro, president of the Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino. “A strict system of rules, shared and respected by producers, that protects consumers while enhancing the work of Trentino distilleries.”
IDENTITY AND REGULATIONS AS PROTECTION TOOLS
In a global market, the presence of clear regulations becomes a distinguishing element. The Geographical Indication of Grappa del Trentino is described as both certification and cultural tool, capable of conveying origin and production method.
“The strength of Grappa del Trentino IG lies in its roots and in the rules we’ve established to protect it,” emphasizes Alessandro Marzadro. “Today, having a solid history and rigorous regulations means guaranteeing quality, identity, and credibility. It’s a daily commitment that protects serious producers and ensures an authentic product, a true expression of our territory.”
International Grappa Day will be established starting in 2026 by ANAG. The goal is to promote a production chain focused on quality and responsibility and to reaffirm the role of shared rules in safeguarding the spirit.
GRAPPA NUMBERS IN TRENTINO
The Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino was founded in 1960 with the mission of protecting and promoting the product. Today it has 24 members. It promotes grappa obtained exclusively from pomace produced in Trentino and qualifies it with the trident origin mark bearing the inscription “Trentino Grappa.”
The sector carries weight in the local economy. Each year in Trentino, approximately 7,500 hectoliters of grappa are produced, equal to 10% of the national total in 70 cl bottles. This is equivalent to about 2.5 million bottles, obtained from the distillation of 13,000 tons of grape skins.
Three main types: grappa from white and aromatic grapes, which represents 60% of the total, and grappa from red grapes, accounting for the remaining 40%.
