Marta Vidal is the new president of D.O. Cava. The election took place yesterday during the plenary session of the Regulatory Council, held at its headquarters in Vilafranca del Penedès. Vidal will lead the denomination for the next four years, after securing the support of an absolute majority of the Plenum members, composed equally of representatives from the production and processing sectors. This is a historic appointment: Marta Vidal is the first woman to hold the position of president of the Denominación de Origen Cava.

Born in Penedès, Vidal holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration. She gained most of her professional experience in the banking sector, holding executive positions. Since 2017, she has been CEO of Vallformosa, a company in Vilobí del Penedès, in the province of Barcelona, with over 150 years of history, where she has led a transformation and professionalization of the business model.

PRIORITIES OF THE NEW MANDATE

In her first speech as president, Vidal thanked the General Assembly for their trust and outlined the guidelines for her mandate. “I take on this responsibility with enthusiasm, humility, respect, and an absolute commitment to the future of Cava,” she stated.

The objective outlined by the new president is to foster a shared vision within the supply chain, in order to strengthen Cava’s positioning in international markets and enhance its role in the global wine landscape.

Among the strategic priorities identified are strengthening the prestige of D.O. Cava, enhancing the vineyard, and consolidating trust among industry operators.

VICE PRESIDENT ALSO ELECTED

The plenary session also appointed David Sendra Anglès as vice president of D.O. Cava. He will support the president during the new four-year term. The Plenum of the Regulatory Council is composed of representatives from the various sectors of the industry. For cooperative winegrowers, Enric Ferré Ginovart and Miguel Lleixa Masana sit, representing the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia.

For non-cooperative winegrowers, the body includes David Sendra Anglès and Fernando Medina of Dominio de la Vega SL, representing the joint candidacy of the Union of Farmers and Young Farmers and Ranchers of Catalonia (JARC), as well as Joan Colomer of J. Fortuny Fàbregas SL, representing the Association of Winegrowers of Penedès.

For base wine producing wineries, Adrià Rabadà of CEVIPE, Grup Cooperatiu SCCL sits, also nominated by the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia. Among the representatives of processing companies are Josep Palau of Freixenet, Pere Escolar of García Carrión 1890, Bruno Colomer of Codorníu, Pere Ventura of Pere Ventura i Família, Joaquim Tosas of Bodegues Sumarroca, and Montse Nicolàs of Viña Torreblanca.

D.O. Cava represents one of Spain’s leading export-oriented denominations. Over 70% of sales are made in international markets. The denomination has 38,000 hectares of vineyards, approximately 6,200 winegrowers, and 349 associated wineries, present in more than 100 countries. Cava is produced using the traditional method and claims a strong connection to its territory of origin, along with a stated commitment to sustainability and supply chain protection.
