Casa Setaro, uno scorcio di Vesuvio nel calice (1)

Casa Setaro, a glimpse of Vesuvius in the glass

IN BREVE
  • Casa Setaro is a family-run winery located on the slopes of Vesuvius, focused on quality viticulture.
  • The estate extends over approximately 20 hectares in Vesuvius National Park, with grape varieties such as Caprettone and Piedirosso.
  • Casa Setaro employs organic farming practices and preserves the biodiversity of the vineyards.
  • Among the main wines are the Metodo Classico ‘Pietrafumante’ and the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio ‘Munazei’.
  • The Lacryma Christi Doc Riserva ‘Don Vincenzo’ represents the elegance of red grape varieties, aged for 24 months in oak.

On the slopes of Vesuvius, in an area with a long-standing winemaking tradition, Casa Setaro, a family-run winery led by Massimo Setaro and his wife Maria Rosaria, tells the story of the territory through its wines.

“We want our wines to be as much a glimpse of the territory as possible. We want to give a vision that is as true to what nature has given us as we can – says Massimo Setaro –. Nowadays we take wine quality for granted; it’s character that makes the difference. We try to create something worth drinking.” The symbol and bastion of this artisanal approach are two native grape varieties: Piedirosso and, even more so, Caprettone.

Casa Setaro: UNGRAFTED VINEYARDS

The estate is located in Trecase, in the Bosco del Monaco district, and the vineyards are cultivated within Vesuvius National Park, between 200 and 350 meters above sea level. The sunny exposures, the climate tempered by sea breezes, and the volcanic soils, composed of sands, lapilli, and rocks derived from ancient lava flows, create favorable conditions for quality viticulture.

The total vineyard area extends over approximately 20 hectares, divided into numerous parcels. The sandy nature of the soils, hostile to phylloxera, allows the cultivation of ungrafted vines. The plants are trained according to the ancient layering system, which involves burying a shoot until it develops an autonomous root system. Agronomic management follows the principles of organic farming, with attention to protecting biodiversity and the balance of the natural environment in which the vineyards are located.

CAPRETTONE, THE SIGNATURE GRAPE OF VESUVIUS

The signature grape variety of Casa Setaro is Caprettone, a white grape variety historically present on Vesuvius, now cultivated in approximately 100 total hectares, experienced and interpreted in various styles. From the Metodo Classico “Pietrafumante“, with its natural acidity and saline drive that invites another sip, to the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Doc “Munazei“, a still white wine with an intriguing nose and a full palate.

The signature “Contradae 61-37” (numbers that in Neapolitan numerology indicate “the forest” and “the monk”), a blend of Caprettone (50%), Greco (30%), and Fiano (20%) grown in the Bosco del Monaco locality. An intense and complex wine, volcanic and Mediterranean. The Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio “Munazei Rosato“, pure Piedirosso, tells the more delicate soul of Casa Setaro.

THE LACRYMA CHRISTI DEL VESUVIO FROM CASA SETARO

But it is the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Doc Riserva “Don Vincenzo” that narrates the power and elegance of the red grape varieties from this area. A single vineyard with Vesuvian pergola training composed of 70% Piedirosso and 30% Aglianico. 24 months in oak. A red wine that combines freshness and volcanic minerality for a long, silky, satisfying palate. The label of “Don Vincenzo” is significant: a hand with an almost primordial graphic that seems to want to hold the volcano between its fingers, as if wanting to protect and preserve it.
