IN BREVE
- The Valtènesi DOP has been removed from the European Union’s register of geographical indications.
- The decision follows a formal request from Italy and was made without opposition.
- The removal is part of a rationalization process for the Brescia Garda area denominations.
- Despite the removal, Valtènesi becomes a production subzone of the Riviera del Garda Classico DOP.
- “La Prima del Valtènesi” 2026 will be held on March 23 at the “Casa del Vino della Valtènesi”
The protected designation of origin Valtènesi has been removed from the DOP list. It therefore officially exits the European Union’s register of geographical indications “to become a subzone and gain more value” as desired by the Consortium. This is established by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/572, adopted yesterday, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, and published in the EU Official Journal. It will take effect in 20 days and will not affect the “La Prima del Valtènesi” 2026 event, scheduled for Monday, March 23 at the “Casa del Vino della Valtènesi” in Puegnago del Garda (Brescia).
REMOVAL OF THE VALTÈNESI DOP: EU REGULATION 2026/572
The measure establishes, in Article 1, the removal of the registration of the “Valtènesi” DOP from the European geographical indications system. The decision follows a formal request submitted by Italy. The procedure, provided for by Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 on geographical indications, was completed without opposition from interested parties.
REORGANIZATION OF BRESCIA GARDA AREA DENOMINATIONS
The removal of the “Valtènesi” DOP is part of the broader process of revision and rationalization of Brescia Garda area denominations. “In recent years,” the Consortium reports, “the local production system has gradually concentrated its identity on the legally mandated combination on labels between Valtènesi and Riviera del Garda Classico, a territory historically linked to the cultivation of the Groppello grape variety.”
The choice to relinquish the “Valtènesi” DOP therefore reflects a strategy of simplification and strengthening market recognition, avoiding overlaps between denominations.

EFFECTS FOR PRODUCERS AND THE WINE MARKET of Valtènesi
From a regulatory standpoint, the removal entails the definitive elimination of the name “Valtènesi” from the list of denominations protected at the European level. For producers, this means operating exclusively under other recognized denominations, primarily Riviera del Garda Classico DOC.
This is not a frequent occurrence in the European GI landscape. The initiative was proposed by a Member State—specifically Italy—and without disputes, signaling a shared orientation throughout the supply chain.
THE REMOVAL OF THE VALTÈNESI DOP: A PROCESS INITIATED IN 2016
The removal of the Valtènesi DOP was actually planned for some time within the reorganization process of the Brescia Garda area denominations. Already in the application to modify the Riviera del Garda Classico production regulations, submitted in 2016, the producers’ intention to unify three denominations—Riviera del Garda Bresciano, Garda Classico, and Valtènesi—into a single DOP was explicitly stated.
In this framework, Valtènesi was designated as a more restricted geographical subzone, with the explicit provision for a subsequent request for removal as an autonomous denomination. Maintaining an autonomous Valtènesi denomination was deemed redundant in a system already oriented toward unification.
VALTÈNESI BETWEEN REMOVED DOP AND STILL-ACTIVE BRAND
Despite the formal removal of the DOP, the name “Valtènesi” continues to be used in territorial and promotional communication. Already scheduled events, such as “La Prima del Valtènesi” on March 23, 2026, maintain the historic denomination.
The case highlights a gap between the regulatory framework and operational reality: while the denomination disappears from the European register, the name remains rooted in local identity and producers’ strategies. An intermediate phase that could generate communication overlaps, but also reflects the weight of the Valtènesi brand in the Brescia Garda area wine system.
