  • Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai maintains that the designation helps enhance the quality and identity of coastal Sangiovese.
  • Release for consumption of Superiore wine is set for January 1st of the second year following the harvest.
  • With Superiore, an identity that already existed between the Annata and Riserva types is made official.

Morellino di Scansano DOCG definitively introduces the Superiore designation. Publication in the Official Gazette makes the changes to the production regulations, approved by the Shareholders’ Meeting in 2025, fully effective. This is a formal step that strengthens the growth path of the Maremma denomination.

The official announcement was made by the Morellino di Scansano Consortium in Florence during Chianti Lovers & Rosso Morellino, an event dedicated to previews of the new vintages. At the event, Morellino was present with 13 wineries and 22 labels for tasting. A context chosen to announce a result that impacts the positioning of the DOCG.

“The publication in the Official Gazette represents an important achievement for the entire denomination – declared Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the Consorzio Morellino di Scansano -. With the Superiore designation we strengthen our path of enhancement, continuing to focus on ever greater selection and identity. It is a concrete sign of our commitment to continue investing in the quality and recognizability of our coastal Sangiovese, offering the market a guarantee of consistency and value.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUPERIORE TYPE

The Superiore designation identifies a type with at least 85% Sangiovese. The use of other non-aromatic black grape varieties is permitted up to a maximum of 15%. Lower yields are required compared to the Annata version, along with a longer aging period.

Release for consumption is set for January 1st of the second year following the harvest. An approach that aims for greater structure and complexity while maintaining freshness and balance, distinctive traits of Morellino di Scansano.

“With Superiore, a new wine is not being born; instead, we have chosen to give an identity to a type that effectively already existed: many of the member wineries have long produced an intermediate wine between the types identified as Annata and Riserva, but it had never been detailed and identified. With this step, we are making its identity official,” adds Guicciardini Calamai.
