Dealcoholized wine: less alcohol but is more sugar better?

Some believe that dealcoholized wines are—at least in part—a response to trends toward a diet more focused on alcohol’s caloric intake and health. But looking closely at the issue, (nutritional) labels in hand, the result is paradoxical. And no one is talking about it. Dealcoholized wine may be lower in calories due to the alcohol component, but higher in calories due to the sugar content.

In some cases, the sugar content can exceed that of many traditional dry wines. From a nutritional standpoint, therefore, “alcohol-free” does not always coincide with “fewer calories” in an absolute sense.

DEALCOHOLIZED WINE AND CALORIES: THE REAL NUMBERS

In traditional dry wine, calories come almost exclusively from ethyl alcohol, which provides 7 kcal per gram. Residual sugars are generally less than 3 grams per liter and have a marginal impact. Approximately:

  • Wine 14% vol: 85-95 kcal per 100 ml
  • Wine 9% vol: 55-60 kcal per 100 ml
  • Dealcoholized wine (0.5% vol): 20-30 kcal per 100 ml

The drastic reduction in alcohol leads to a sharp cut in the energy intake related to ethanol. However, the final caloric figure also depends on the amount of sugar present in the finished product. Sugar provides 4 kcal per gram. If dealcoholized wine contains significant amounts of added sugars, the caloric advantage over a traditional dry wine can be significantly reduced.

WHY SUGAR IS ADDED TO DEALCOHOLIZED WINES

Alcohol is not just a psychoactive substance. In a wine, it contributes to structure, volume, and a sense of smoothness. It is also a carrier of aromas. When it is almost totally removed through technologies such as reverse osmosis, vacuum evaporation, or spinning cone columns, the product loses body and roundness. The flavor profile can end up thin and unbalanced.

To compensate for this lack, some producers intervene with rectified concentrated must or sugars permitted by regulations. The goal is to restore sensory balance, bringing back sweetness and a perception of greater fullness. The result can be a dealcoholized wine with a sugar content higher than that of many conventional dry wines.

COMPARISON BETWEEN DRY AND DEALCOHOLIZED WINE

A dry wine at 13.5% vol with very low sugars has a stable and predictable caloric intake, linked almost exclusively to alcohol. A dealcoholized wine, while having fewer calories from alcohol, can contain more carbohydrates. A “disaster” for those following, for example, a ketogenic diet.

In some cases the sugar content exceeds that of a dry wine, approaching values typical of semi-dry or off-dry wines. From a nutritional point of view, therefore, the difference cannot be evaluated based on alcohol content alone. The entire composition must be considered.

ALCOHOL, SUGARS, AND HEALTH

Reducing calories does not automatically equal a healthier product. In the case of traditional wine, the issue is linked to the risks associated with alcohol abuse, far more than consumption in moderate amounts. In the case of dealcoholized wines, the focus shifts to sugars and glycemic impact.

“For those monitoring body weight or blood sugar,” emphasizes nutritionist biologist Umberto Rossi, Winemag’s consultant for the Alcohol and Health column, “the presence of added sugars can be a significant factor. Furthermore, the greater sweetness can affect the perception of drinkability. The comparison between traditional wine and dealcoholized wine is therefore not just caloric. It concerns balance, composition, and consumption patterns.”

THE “ALCOHOL-FREE” PARADOX

“The claim ‘alcohol-free’ or ‘0.0%’,” Rossi continues, “is often associated with lightness and reduced energy intake. In many cases, this is true. But it is not an absolute rule. A dealcoholized wine may have fewer calories from the alcohol portion but compensate with added sugars.”

The final result depends on production choices and product formulation. For the consumer, the nutritionist biologist warns, “evaluation should be based not only on alcohol content but also on the nutritional label and the actual sugar content.”
