China will host the 47th OIV World Congress of Vine and Wine. The event will…
CHINA IN THE GLOBAL VINE AND WINE SECTOR
According to the OIV, China has the third-largest vineyard surface area in the world. It is also the eleventh-largest country for wine consumption and imports, and the world’s leading producer of table grapes, accounting for 43% of global production.
In recent decades, the country has developed the production of quality wines linked to an increasing diversity of terroirs. This journey has helped strengthen China’s presence on the international wine scene.
The Yinchuan Congress will therefore also be an opportunity to closely observe the evolution of Chinese viticulture and its relationship with key global industry themes.
THE ROLE OF THE OIV IN INTERNATIONAL VITICULTURE
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine is an intergovernmental scientific and technical body. It is considered a global reference for the vine and wine sector.
The OIV currently has 51 Member States, including grape and wine producing and consuming countries. Together, they represent 90% of the world’s vineyard area, 88% of global wine production, and 75% of world consumption.
Twice a year, over 500 experts meet to evaluate, discuss, and approve resolutions by consensus. Working areas include viticulture and table grapes, oenology and analysis methods, law and economics of vine and wine, and consumer health and safety.
The 2026 World Congress of Vine and Wine fits into this framework as a platform for technical and scientific exchange. For China, it represents a further step in consolidating its role on the global wine stage.
