Creating a network of Abruzzo wine ambassadors in foreign markets: this is the goal of the Abruzzo Wine Academy, a project by the Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo that has involved 26 industry professionals—sommeliers, buyers, and journalists—in lessons, tastings, and field visits.

“When we conceived the Abruzzo Wine Academy, we wanted to reach out to stakeholders in the main target markets for Abruzzo wines. We wanted to communicate to a panel of experts how and what is changing in the regional wine world, both at a generational level and in terms of production philosophy,” says Alessandro Nicodemi, president of the Consorzio. “The format is now well-established and over the years is creating a highly qualified network of ambassadors.”

LESSONS, TASTINGS, AND REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Each day of the program is divided into two parts. In the first part, participants from the United States, Canada, China, and Japan attended lessons by expert Filippo Bartolotta, accompanied by tastings, at La Chiave dei Trabocchi in San Vito Chietino. The second part is dedicated to regional focuses and meetings with producers. Activities will cover appellations such as Colline Teramane Docg and Villamagna Doc, as well as minor white grape varieties like Cococciola, Passerina, and Montonico.

VISITS BETWEEN THE COAST, HILLS, AND PELIGNA VALLEY

The program was completed with field trips across the region. Guests visited the Trabocchi Coast, the Teatine Hills, and the Peligna Valley to observe firsthand the geographical and production diversity that characterizes the region.
