Agave Spirits and “Modern” Rums: Spirit Trends for 2026

IN BREVE
  • The spirits market, including Agave, Tequila, Mezcal, and Rum, saw growth from 2019 to 2024, with Tequila sales increasing by over 150%.
  • Mexico, with its tradition and culture, is leading the boom in these spirits, becoming a global benchmark.
  • Rum is reinventing itself with flavored blends to attract new generations.

Mexican Agave spirits (Tequila and Mezcal) and “modern” interpretations of Rum are the new trends for 2026. This is according to Sierra Madre—a distribution company founded in 1994, specialized in Mexican spirits since 2009, and active in the Rum world since 2014—during the recent ProWein Preview in Dusseldorf.

THE GLOBAL SPIRITS MARKET: CONSTANT GROWTH

The global spirits market has recorded a steady increase from 2019 to 2024, rising from 484 to 551 billion dollars. Tequila confirms itself as the phenomenon of the moment, with growth exceeding 150% in five years. Rum, on the other hand, maintains a solid position, continuing to be one of the most stable and appreciated categories.

EUROPE FOCUS: AGAVE AND SUGARCANE ON THE RISE

After the 2020 downturn, the sector has shown strong resilience, marking a constant increase and an adaptability that reflects the industry’s dynamism. In Europe, the post-pandemic recovery has brought new momentum to the spirits market. Tequila sales tripled from 2018 to 2024, positioning it as the most dynamic category. At the same time, rum is consolidating its popularity, continuing to represent a classic yet contemporary choice, appreciated by consumers across different age groups.

MEXICO: BETWEEN CULTURAL ROOTS AND GLOBAL IMPACT

Mexico confirms its role as the absolute protagonist of the spirits boom. Beyond its deep ties to tradition, the country exerts a growing influence on the global lifestyle, becoming a reference point for food, music, art, and tourism. Tequila and Mezcal represent its authentic expression, ambassadors of a culture that blends craftsmanship and modernity.

Mezcal is an artisanal spirit made from various agave varieties, including Espadín, Tobalá, and Cuishe, produced primarily in Oaxaca. It is distinguished by its smoky flavor and traditional production methods.

Tequila, however, is made from Blue Weber Agave and is typical of the Jalisco region. Its profile is fruitier, fresher, and cleaner, the result of more industrialized processes. As industry experts ironically note, “Every Tequila is a Mezcal, but not every Mezcal is a Tequila.” Both spirits are regulated by denominations of origin involving several Mexican states, including Jalisco, Oaxaca, and Guanajuato.

AUTHENTICITY AND LIFESTYLE IN MODERN CULTURE

Tequila and Mezcal are redefining the concept of conscious, high-quality drinking. Their spread in mixology bars, trendy spots, and among consumers attentive to product origin reflects a cultural evolution where authenticity and innovation coexist.

RUM: THE REINVENTED CLASSIC

Rum continues to reinvent itself without losing its identity. Produced from sugarcane through fermentation, distillation, aging, and blending, it offers a wide range of expressions: from white to dark, through to flavored blends.

It is precisely these “modern” and perhaps less traditional interpretations that are attracting new generations of consumers and piquing the curiosity of Gen Z. Through these products, young people between 20 and 35 are rediscovering rum as a contemporary drink. This rediscovery is also fueled by festivals, clubs, and influencers. The product’s versatility makes it a star of innovative cocktails and links its image to success and conviviality.
