The decision by the United States Supreme Court to strike down the tariffs introduced by Donald Trump has been welcomed by Coldiretti, Filiera Italia, and Confagricoltura. The tariffs had significantly impacted Italian agri-food exports to the United States, generating total estimated losses of nearly €400 million.
According to the organizations, the tariffs led to a significant slowdown in exports, with negative peaks in certain sectors. Wine, in particular, saw declines of over 8%. This impact hit one of the key markets for agri-food products made in Italy.
THE IMPACT ON AGRI-FOOD EXPORTS
Coldiretti and Filiera Italia emphasize that the Court’s decision represents long-awaited news for the sector, after years marked by trade tensions between Europe and the United States. The introduction of the tariffs had increased costs for American importers, with direct consequences for the sales of Italian products.
The estimated losses of nearly 400 million euros illustrate the effect of the measures on a sector that finds one of its main commercial outlets in the US. Wine is among the most penalized products, but the repercussions have affected the entire agri-food basket more generally.
AVOIDING NEW TENSIONS BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE USA
“It is essential to build a dialogue rather than a confrontation between Europe and the USA to support our economies and avoid the chaos that the announcement of Trump’s next moves is already generating,” emphasize the leaders of Coldiretti and Filiera Italia. The stated goal is to re-establish a framework of stability in transatlantic trade relations to ensure continuity for exporting companies and supply chain operators.
COMMENT FROM CONFAGRICOLTURA
Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Confagricoltura, also commented on the ruling: “This news comes unexpectedly. It is a strong decision by the United States Supreme Court. A decision that dismantles the entire legal process on which President Trump’s tariffs were based.”
“All of this,” Giansanti emphasizes, “generates deep instability at a time when we need certainty. We have begun a journey with our American importers. I believe and hope that an agreement can be quickly reached with the President of the United States to also understand what tools he will be able to use regarding the agreements defined so far.”
Words that underscore the urgency of clarification between the parties to avoid new turbulence in a strategic market for Italian agri-food.
