The members’ assembly of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco has approved the extension of the Spoleto DOC area. The measure brings the denomination to include not only the municipalities already involved, but also three new territories: Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, and Giano dell’Umbria. The provision follows the Consortium’s commitment to promote the white viticulture of the territory and, in particular, the signature grape variety Trebbiano Spoletino.
The expansion of the Spoleto DOC approved by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco represents an important move for the sector in Umbria. It not only opens new territories to the denomination, but strengthens the strategy of promoting Trebbiano Spoletino and the territory, linked to the better-known red DOCs. The direction is clear.
THE SPOLETO DOC AREA EXPANDS IN TREBBIANO SPOLETINO
The amendment provides that grapes intended for Spoleto DOC can now also come from Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, and Giano dell’Umbria, in addition to the territories already indicated in the regulations (Montefalco, Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi, Foligno, Spoleto, Trevi). This is an expansion that strengthens territorial cohesion and opens new opportunities for the wineries affected by the change.
THE STRATEGIC CHOICE OF THE CONSORZIO TUTELA VINI MONTEFALCO E SPOLETO
The Consortium’s decision responds to two clear objectives: to promote “the different souls of Trebbiano Spoletino”. And to confirm the commitment to promote the Spoleto DOC denomination as a reference for local white grape viticulture.
With the expansion of the area, the range of eligible vineyards is broadened. Wineries operating in the new municipalities will be able to participate in Spoleto DOC production – provided they comply with the regulations – and join the denomination’s portfolio.
