Fuoricasa, ma non troppo il Pelaverga di Cordero di Montezemolo

Fuoricasa, but not too far: Cordero di Montezemolo’s Pelaverga

IN BREVE
  • Pelaverga is an ancient grape variety with over 300 years of history, now reinterpreted by Cordero di Montezemolo in the municipality of Cherasco.
  • Since it cannot obtain the Verduno DOC designation, this Pelaverga falls under the broader Langhe Doc.
  • The Fuoricasa project stands out for its fresh and innovative image, representing the desire to explore new oenological spaces.
  • It has a bright red color and features aromas of strawberry, violet, and raspberry, with an elegant and smooth palate.
  • Fuoricasa, to be served slightly chilled during the warm months, could attract young people to the great wines of the Langhe.

An ancient grape variety, with over 300 years of history, today extremely relevant in the wine scene. The latest creation from Cordero di Montezemolo is a Pelaverga born outside the municipality of Verduno, traditionally associated with this variety, and specifically in the municipality of Cherasco. The distance is minimal, just a few kilometers as the crow flies and, above all, almost identical soil and climate conditions. The result? A Pelaverga that rightfully takes its place alongside the most appreciated Verduno Pelaverga DOC wines.

FUORICASA, THE LANGHE DOC PELAVERGA BY CORDERO DI MONTEZEMOLO

Elena and Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo presented the project at the Al Cortile Figli dei Fiori bistro, a redeveloped but intentionally unrestored corner of 1950s Milan. Their desire to produce Pelaverga was clear, despite facing a lack of available land in Verduno.

Pelaverga produced in Cherasco cannot carry the DOC designation, but instead falls under the Langhe Doc, a much broader and more generalized appellation. Elena and Alberto see this as an opportunity to promote Pelaverga outside the “comfort zone” of Verduno.

FUORICASA, a magnet for young consumers

Fuoricasa presents itself with a fresh and innovative image starting with the label, featuring an open cage that evokes the link to its roots while leaving room for the pursuit of freedom and the enthusiasm of exploring new spaces. A way of “leaving home without losing the keys.”

Pelaverga is certainly a grape variety little known to less experienced consumers, unlike much more famous Langhe wines such as Barolo. “Fuoricasa can represent a way to attract young people to the great wines of the Langhe,” comments Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo, “but the reverse relationship can also work.”

LANGHE DOC PELAVERGA FUORICASA: THE TASTING

Fuoricasa is characterized by a bright, pale red color that immediately captivates the nose with delicate hints of strawberry, violet, and raspberry.

The background of white pepper tickles the nose and invites a sip—elegant and smooth, with a structure that is never intrusive and moderate tannins. Thanks to these characteristics, combined with a well-integrated alcohol content (13%), Fuoricasa is very well suited to being consumed slightly chilled during the warmer months.
