Valle d’Aosta deserves more media attention: its wines can compete with those from more famous regions.

Which are the best Valle d’Aosta wines? The Winemag exclusive tasting assigns scores to 66 labels, divided into 20 types and vintages ranging from 2018 to 2025, the latest vintage available on the market, awaiting the 2026 harvest. A highly reliable Valle d’Aosta / Vallée d’Aoste DOC emerges, with high quality peaks distributed among white, red, and dessert wines and less conventional interpretations.

The 62 wines evaluated within the appellation reach an average of 90.8 points. A total of 46 labels, or 74.2%, reach at least the 90-point mark. Twelve, or 19.4%, obtain 93 points or more. The evidence is clear: the quality of Valle d’Aosta wines has grown exponentially in recent years.

QUALITY GROWN IN RECENT YEARS, BUT COMMUNICATION IS LACKING

The Northern Italian region is making a strong case for an increasingly decisive role on restaurant wine lists—both national and international—aiming to raise the bar with wines from local varieties and interpretations of international grapes that, at their best, have little to envy compared to the world’s most famous regions.

Grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, praised in other corners of Italy, have found a home in Valle d’Aosta to grow without the clamor of newspaper headlines, speaking the language of the glass perfectly.

From this comes a conviction that tastes both sweet and bitter: if Valle d’Aosta were to start investing collectively in communication, it would be able to throw a wrench in the works of other DOCs more acclaimed by a trade press that increasingly reports on single, tiny puzzle pieces without a minimal—yet necessary—overall vision.

WINEMAG: VALLE D’AOSTA / VALLÉE D’AOSTE DOC 2025 PUT TO THE TEST

The 2025 vintage is represented by 16 wines, with an exact average of 90 points. Nine samples, 56.3%, reach or exceed this threshold. Two enter the 93-point-and-above range.

The best result goes to the Vallée d’Aoste Chambave Muscat 2025 by Laurent Théodule, scoring 94 points. This is followed by the Torrette 2025 by Château Feuillet with 93. The Muscat Petit Grains by Maison Agricole D&D reaches 92, while 91 points are awarded to the Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle by Cave Mont Blanc, the Petite Arvine by La Source, and the Torrette by Les Crêtes.

The picture reflects an overall good vintage, with more consistent results in the 89 to 92 point range than at the absolute top. The wines are still in the early stages of their evolution. The data therefore primarily measures the starting quality and the wineries’ ability to manage the early stages of aging.
