Franco Bernabei has died, one of the most authoritative figures in Italian winemaking. Winemaker, consultant, interpreter of Sangiovese, and protagonist of some of the most important chapters of modern Italian wine, Bernabei leaves a professional legacy that spans territories, appellations, and generations of producers.

Assoenologi also expressed condolences, remembering Bernabei as a member of the Tuscan Section since 1977 and as a central figure in the qualitative growth of Italian wine. “With his extraordinary expertise, innovative vision, and deep respect for wine territories,” the statement reads, “he helped write fundamental chapters in the history of Italian wine, becoming a reference point for entire generations of winemakers,” the association emphasizes.

FROM TUSCANY TO THE GREAT NAMES OF SANGIOVESE

Coming from a family connected to the world of wine, Franco Bernabei graduated in Viticulture and Enology from the University of Padua. His professional path, however, found its decisive place in Tuscany. After his experience as technical director at Ruffino, in 1978 he began working as a consulting winemaker for several estates that would later become absolute benchmarks of Italian wine.

Bernabei’s name remains particularly linked to the era of the so-called Italian wine Renaissance. A phase in which many Tuscan wineries moved from a still traditional interpretation of production to a more precise approach, based on grape selection, attention to vineyards, control of vinification, and greater territorial identity.

In this journey, Bernabei worked on wines that became symbols. Among these, Flaccianello della Pieve by Fontodi, Fontalloro by Fèlsina, and Vigneto Bucerchiale by Selvapiana. Labels that helped redefine the profile of Sangiovese, demonstrating how the grape could express depth, longevity, and identity without losing its connection to the territory.

A CONSULTANT FOR MANY ITALIAN WINE REGIONS

Reducing Franco Bernabei to Sangiovese alone would be limiting, however. His work extended to numerous Italian regions, from Tuscany to Friuli, from Marche to Umbria, from Veneto to Puglia, and to Calabria and Sardinia. Consulting work that was not based on a single formula, but on the search for balance between technique, interpretation of place, and commercial vision.

In 1993, he founded Enoproject with his wife Daniela, a wine and viticultural consulting company based in Greve in Chianti. From there, Bernabei worked over time with dozens of wineries, alongside his sons Marco and Matteo, both winemakers. The laboratory and consulting structure became one of the most recognizable centers of his method: analysis, rigor, constant dialogue with the vineyard, and attention to the entire supply chain.

His figure belongs to a generation of technicians who changed the role of the winemaker in Italy. No longer just the person responsible for the cellar, but an interpreter of the company’s vision, the positioning of wines, and the relationship between territory and market. A transformation that Bernabei experienced as a protagonist, contributing to the international growth of many Italian labels.

CONDOLENCES FROM ASSOENOLOGI

Assoenologi expressed “deep condolences” for the passing of Franco Bernabei, remembering his authority and contribution to the history of Italian winemaking. To the family, colleagues, and all who worked with him, the association extended “the closeness and most sincere embrace of President Riccardo Cotarella, the National Council, and all of Assoenologi.”

“His example and professional legacy will continue to live on in the future of Italian winemaking,” Assoenologi concludes. Words that summarize the weight of a career built on the relationship between technical knowledge and respect for territories. With Franco Bernabei, one of the winemakers who most influenced the reputation of Italian wine in contemporary times has passed away. In Italy and abroad.
