The Fivi Treviso Delegation expresses “strong regret” over the decision to exclude representatives of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG and Asolo Prosecco DOCG Consortia from the role of torchbearers. These are territories directly involved in the Milano Cortina Olympics events. According to Fivi Treviso, the decision appears inconsistent with the local context. Furthermore, it is inconsistent with the denominations affected by the passage of the Olympic flame.
TORCHBEARERS AND CONSORTIA: FIVI TREVISO’S POSITION
The text released by the delegation emphasizes how the presence of only the President of the Prosecco DOC Protection Consortium, Giancarlo Guidolin, as torchbearer in an area considered the “historic, symbolic, and identity heart” of Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG is interpreted as “a decision inconsistent with the values that the Olympic movement intends to represent: unity, sharing, and team spirit.” In particular, the delegation highlights the lack of representation of all the territories involved.
Fivi Treviso also recalls the institutional nature of the choices related to the flame’s route and the identification of torchbearers. This, it states, should be based on criteria of “representation and institutional coherence.”
CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE DOCG, ASOLO PROSECCO DOCG, AND PROSECCO DOC: TERRITORIAL BALANCE
The statement emphasizes that the decision would have required prior consultation with the host Consortium and local production entities. This consultation would have avoided “entirely avoidable misunderstandings and tensions.”
The choice is defined as “inappropriate and lacking the necessary institutional sensitivity” by numerous operators in the territory. This is especially true in a context that—according to the delegation—is characterized by “well-defined historical balances.” Finally, there is a clear distinction between the denominations.
Fivi Treviso adds that the role of torchbearer “could have been performed in other territorial contexts,” avoiding symbolic overlaps and relational issues.
OLYMPIC FLAME AND TEAM SPIRIT: THE CALL FOR DIALOGUE
The delegation finally recalls the meaning of the torchbearer as a symbol of peace and unity. It emphasizes that this value risks being weakened “when dialogue, respect for territories, and shared decision-making are lacking.”
The text reiterates the need for relationships based on “transparency, mutual respect, and institutional correctness,” especially on occasions of national and international significance. Furthermore, it notes that the promotion of Italian wine also depends on behaviors capable of enhancing territorial specificities “without fueling divisions.”
The statement closes with a hope: “May this episode become a moment of reflection and may, in the future, initiatives of this importance be approached with greater awareness and with an authentic spirit of collaboration.”
