With the warm colors of the harvest and the scent of autumn, Nero d’Avola returns to fill the glasses. It is the wine that represents Sicily more than any other: it speaks of contrasts and harmonies, combining strength and finesse, warmth and freshness.
“Nero d’Avola is the symbol of a Sicily that knows how to renew itself while remaining faithful to its roots, a wine born from a unique land that manages to interpret it with passion and sincerity,” says Camillo Pugliesi, director of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia.
PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF THE NATIVE GRAPE VARIETY
Pugliesi emphasizes the Consortium’s role in enhancing the island’s wine heritage: “It is a wine that adapts to time and taste, capable of uniting the richness of the Sicilian sun with the depth of its history and the strength of its people. Our Consortium has an important task: to protect the identity of native grape varieties, enhancing the specific varieties that make Sicilian wine a unique heritage, and promoting them in national and international markets so they become ambassadors of our territory in the world.”
Through biodiversity conservation projects, scientific collaborations, and communication initiatives, the Consortium aims to showcase the wine in its entirety: the product, the history, and the deep bond with its land of origin.
FROM THE 17TH CENTURY TO THE MODERN IDENTITY OF NERO D’AVOLA
The origins of Nero d’Avola date back to the 17th century, when it was known as Calabrese nero. Born in the southeast of the island, between Pachino and Vittoria, the variety then spread throughout Sicily, taking on different characteristics based on the territory. The limestone soils of the south, the clay hills of the center, and the sea breezes of the western coast have given life to different expressions of the same grape. Biotypes ranging from power to grace, from structure to finesse, while always maintaining the recognizable imprint of Nero d’Avola.
THE GLASS THAT TELLS THE STORY OF SICILY
The deep red color and intense aromas of ripe cherry, plum, strawberry, and spices make Nero d’Avola immediately recognizable. On the palate, it stands out for its balance and density, with soft tannins and a persistence that recalls the sun and the minerality of the earth. It is a wine that combines passion and elegance, embodying the soul of Sicily.
AUTUMN, THE SEASON OF NERO D’AVOLA
With the arrival of autumn, Nero d’Avola finds its ideal season. The rhythms slow down, the flavors become more intense. It is a wine that invites conviviality and memory, the pleasure of a story passed down from generation to generation. Tasting it in this season means rediscovering the most authentic Sicily, made of contrasts and harmonies, of light and depth. An island where every sip tells of man’s labor, the breath of the wind, and the warmth of the sun.
