Chianti DOCG is changing and updating its production rules. The new production regulations approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry and published in the Official Gazette have come into effect. This represents the most significant intervention in recent years for the denomination, the result of a process initiated by the Consorzio Vino Chianti in 2020 with the aim of adapting the production system to the evolution of the wine sector.

Among the main new features is the introduction of Chianti Rosé DOCG, a new type designed to expand the denomination’s offering in a segment that continues to generate interest in both the Italian and international markets.

NEW FEATURES IN THE DENOMINATION

The new regulations also mark the official entry of the “Terre di Vinci” subzone into the geography of Chianti DOCG. The area, linked to Leonardo da Vinci’s birthplace, thus obtains formal recognition after a process promoted by local wineries. The inclusion of the new subzone aims to enhance an area considered of particular historical and viticultural importance within the denomination.

MORE CONTROLS ON THE SUPPLY CHAIN

The changes also concern the strengthening of control procedures, with the aim of increasing transparency and offering greater guarantees to consumers. It becomes mandatory to obtain the suitability certificate issued by the Control Body before transferring batches of Chianti and Chianti Superiore intended for marketing.

The regulations also provide for the obligation of prior notification to the same body in the case of transfer of new wine still in the fermentation phase intended for DOCG.

IDENTITY AND INNOVATION

“These changes represent the balance between identity and innovation – comments Giovanni Busi, president of the Consorzio Vino Chianti –. On the one hand, we continue to defend the elements that have made Chianti one of the best-known Italian wines in the world; on the other, we introduce tools that allow wineries to more effectively address market challenges and climate change.”

According to the Consortium president, the new regulations arise from shared dialogue with the supply chain and aim to provide useful tools to address the sector’s transformations.

“The new Rosé allows us to enter an expanding segment, especially during a particular period like summer when Chianti typically experiences a natural slowdown in sales. These new regulations – concludes Busi – are the result of shared work with the supply chain that looks to the future without renouncing our history.”
