  • Both wines are on sale at Esselunga supermarkets, but they differ in their approach to consumption.
  • Territorial differences between Riesling productions are evident even in supermarket wines, with distinctive styles from Alsace and Mosel.
  • The global Riesling market is worth approximately 3.5 billion euros, with a projected annual growth of 4.5% until 2033.

Riesling remains one of the most recognizable white grape varieties globally. Its ability to reflect terroir makes it ideal for direct comparisons, not only between fine wines and top-tier labels but also among supermarket wines. Two bottles under 10 euros, one from Alsace (Arthur Metz) and one from Mosel (Peter & Peter), offer an immediate comparison between styles, territories, and production approaches.

ALSACE RIESLING ARTHUR METZ: A MATURER AND MORE STRUCTURED PROFILE

The Alsace Riesling Arthur Metz (€8.90) comes from grapes grown on marl, limestone, and sandstone. Vinification follows a traditional approach, with temperature-controlled fermentation. In the glass, it appears golden yellow, with notes of citrus and a clear mineral imprint. The palate is balanced, with good structure and persistence. A fuller style that reflects the typical gastronomic positioning of Alsatian Rieslings.

Arthur Metz operates on a large scale, with approximately 14 million bottles and over one thousand hectares of vineyards. The company adopts HVE3 environmental certifications across its entire Riesling production. In Alsace, the variety represents about 22% of the vineyard area, but the regional market is changing. Crémant d’Alsace has surpassed 35% of sales, reducing the weight of still wines.

MOSEL RIESLING PETER & PETER: VERTICALITY AND ACIDIC PRECISION

The Peter & Peter Riesling Trocken (€7) comes from Mosel vineyards located on steep slate slopes. The soil is decisive for the wine’s profile. Apple, peach, and lemon zest emerge on the nose, with a marked mineral component. Acidity dominates the mouth, making the wine more tense and direct compared to the Alsatian version.

Mosel is one of the most identity-driven areas for Riesling, with over 5,300 hectares dedicated to it. The climate and exposure favor slow ripening and precise aromatic development. The traditional style of the area also includes low-alcohol wines, such as Kabinett, but in the trocken version, a drier and more linear interpretation prevails.

DIRECT COMPARISON: STYLE VS. DRINKABILITY

In the direct comparison between the Alsace and Mosel Rieslings produced by Arthur Metz and Peter & Peter, both on sale at Esselunga supermarkets, two opposite interpretations of the same grape variety emerge. Alsace focuses more on structure, breadth, and gastronomic vocation. Mosel plays on freshness, acidity, and immediate drinkability.

In the context of supermarket wines, the Mosel Riesling Peter & Peter is more accessible and immediate, making it more suitable for daily consumption. The Arthur Metz Riesling instead offers greater complexity. It requires a more defined consumption context, with slightly more structured dishes.

THE RIESLING MARKET AMONG NEW CONSUMPTION TRENDS

Riesling is worth approximately 3.5 billion euros globally, with a projected annual growth of 4.5% until 2033. Demand is shifting toward lighter and drier white wines. Germany leads world production, followed by France, Australia, and the United States.

In this scenario, Riesling remains competitive even in the under 10 euro range, with clear territorial differences that remain perceptible even among wines sold at the supermarket.
