Wine-loving contestant on Wheel of Fortune: Gerry Scotti’s reaction

A wine moment in one of the recent episodes of Wheel of Fortune. Among the contestants was Vito, a genuine wine enthusiast, who introduced himself to the audience by openly declaring his passion for bottles, tastings, and wine regions.

A detail that didn’t go unnoticed, especially in a television studio where the usual topics are prizes, letters, and light-up boards rather than grape varieties and appellations. Least of all by host Gerry Scotti, a wine producer with Cantine Giorgi in his native Oltrepò Pavese.

During the classic wheel spin, when choosing the word to accompany the selected letter, the contestant came out with “N” for Nebbiolo. Followed by “T” for Timorasso. Gerry Scotti’s reaction was immediate.

“Ah, bravo, Nebbiolo: one of my favorite wines!” And then: “‘T’ for ‘Timorasso,’ which is a wine from Tortona. There, it’s called Dertona and Timorasso is a white wine typical of that area. You know, we’re colleagues…” When asked “Are you a sommelier?”, contestant Vito replied that he was “an enthusiast.”

Wine thus entered, if only for a few seconds, the mainstream television narrative. Not as a technical subject of discussion, but as an identity element, a distinctive trait of a person who chooses to define themselves also through their passion. Yet another confirmation that wine is entertainment. And culture.
