The award was presented in D\u00fcsseldorf during <strong>ProWein 2026<\/strong>. Presenting the award to the Italian winemaker and manager were Patrick Schmitt MW, Sarah Harrison, executive director of the IMW, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/degustare-come-un-master-of-wine-i-segreti-del-presidente-mw-rod-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roderick Smith MW<\/a>, chair of the institute.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award is given annually by <strong>Masters of Wine who work as winemakers and by winners of previous editions<\/strong>. This recognition honors outstanding achievements in the field of winemaking. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f983d9e9\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>RENZO COTARELLA, CEO AND CHIEF OENOLOGIST OF MARCHESI ANTINORI<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cotarella is the <strong>chief executive officer and chief oenologist of Marchesi Antinori<\/strong>, one of Italy&#8217;s most important wine companies. He was born in 1954 in Monterubiaglio, near Orvieto. He graduated in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Perugia in 1978, specializing in the study of soils and the relationship between terroir and grape varieties.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1981, he was appointed <strong>director and winemaker of Castello della Sala<\/strong>, the Antinori family&#8217;s Umbrian estate. In 1993, he became <strong>chief oenologist of Marchesi Antinori<\/strong>, then <strong>managing director in 1998<\/strong> and <strong>CEO in 2005<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to his activities in Italy, Cotarella oversees several of the Antinori group&#8217;s international projects, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/stag-s-leap-wine-cellars-acquistata-da-marchesi-antinori-napa-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stag\u2019s Leap Wine Cellars<\/a> in Napa Valley<\/strong>. He also oversees <strong>Col Solare Estate in Washington State<\/strong>. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including <strong>Wine Enthusiast&#8217;s Best Winemaker of the World in 2001<\/strong> and <strong>Best Italian Winemaker awarded by Vinoway Selection in 2024<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-a0b59eb7\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>RENZO COTARELLA&#8217;S COMMENT<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>I am happy and deeply honored<\/strong>,\u201d stated Renzo Cotarella, \u201cboth personally and on behalf of the Antinori team, to receive this prestigious award from the Institute of Masters of Wine. I consider it a testament to our commitment to producing wines that reflect the philosophy of the Masters of Wine. Moreover, he has also had an impact on an international level. He is a fully deserving winner of the Winemakers\u2019 Winemaker Award 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f0a3ef04\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>THE INSTITUTE OF MASTERS OF WINE&#8217;S VERDICT<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Patrick Schmitt MW<\/strong> added: \u201cWhen looking at the list of Winemakers\u2019 Winemaker Award winners, it is always hard to imagine who could join such prestigious company. However, in the case of Renzo Cotarella, the choice seems obvious. He is a figure as admired as the late Anne-Claude Leflaive, as respected as Paul Draper, and as innovative as Peter Sisseck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rod Smith MW<\/strong>, chair of the Institute of Masters of Wine, emphasized: \u201cRenzo embodies the <strong>rare balance between innovation and the stewardship of tradition<\/strong> that characterizes the great protagonists of oenology.
