This is according to a recent study conducted by the <strong>Centro Estadual de Diagn\u00f3stico e Pesquisa em Fruticultura<\/strong> (DDPA\/SEAPDR) of the <strong>Government of Rio Grande do Sul<\/strong>, with contributions from researchers at the <strong>Universidade de Caxias do Sul<\/strong> and <strong>Embrapa Uva e Vinho<\/strong>, which analyzed the agronomic behavior of various clones in the <strong>Veran\u00f3polis region<\/strong>, in the <strong>State of Rio Grande do Sul<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-769015d1\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>WELSCHRIESLING IN BRAZIL: SURFACE AREA AND ROLE IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the main wine-growing district of Southern Brazil, <strong>Welschriesling covers about 292 hectares<\/strong>, ranking among the significant varieties for fine wine production. Together with Chardonnay, it represents a fundamental base for Brazilian sparkling wines, a growing and transforming segment. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-7a2e7514\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>COMPARING WELSCHRIESLING CLONES: ISV-1, RI12V23, AND VCR-365<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research examined three clones of Italian origin: <strong>ISV-1, RI12V23, and VCR-365<\/strong>. The goal is to identify the genetic materials best suited to local soil and climate conditions, characterized by altitude (705 meters) and climatic variability. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f1bda720\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>EARLINESS AND VEGETATIVE CYCLE: AN ADVANTAGE FOR WHITES<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welschriesling is distinguished by <strong>early phenology compared to red varieties<\/strong>. Budbreak occurs in early September, while the harvest takes place between January and early February. This characteristic allows for an earlier harvest and better adaptation to the region&#8217;s climatic conditions.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-1385aeb0\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>BUDBREAK AND CHILLING REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>variety&#8217;s chilling requirement<\/strong> is estimated at about 150 hours below 7.2\u00b0C. In the cycle analyzed, 379 hours were accumulated, ensuring satisfactory budbreak. The <strong>VCR-365 clone recorded the highest value<\/strong>, with 73.8% of buds opening. The <strong>ISV-1 clone<\/strong>, on the other hand, shows <strong>later budbreak<\/strong>, which is useful for reducing the risk of damage from spring frosts.   <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-87962818\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>PRODUCTION AND GRAPE QUALITY<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Production levels for Welschriesling clones are <strong>around 2 kg per vine<\/strong>, with yields between 8 and 8.4 tons per hectare. These values are compatible with the production of grapes intended for quality wines. The RI12V23 clone emerges as the top performer:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2.1 kg per vine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>average cluster weight of 160.5 grams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>17 \u00b0Brix<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>acidity of 94 meq\/L<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH 3.17<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These parameters are <strong>consistent with the production of sparkling wine bases<\/strong>, as confirmed by the Brazilian research itself.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-adaf8241\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>CLIMATE AND RIPENING: EFFECTS OF RAIN<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The climatic conditions of the 2020\/2021 cycle, during which the measurements were taken, affected the grape parameters. <strong>Heavy rains during ripening<\/strong>, especially in January, led to a dilution of sugars. For Welschriesling, this results in more moderate \u00b0Brix levels, which are considered favorable for sparkling wine production.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-75689ad0\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>CLUSTER COMPACTNESS AND PHYTOSANITARY ASPECTS<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>RI12V23 clone<\/strong> has <strong>more compact clusters than the others<\/strong>. This characteristic can increase the risk of phytosanitary issues, but no significant damage was detected during the observed cycle. Overall, all clones showed good health.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-083069c0\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>CLONES AND ADAPTATION: THE CHOICE OF GENETIC MATERIAL<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study highlights <strong>the importance of clonal selection based on the environment<\/strong>. Differences between clones influence not only yield but also grape quality and oenological destination. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-0d259bab\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>THE RI12V23 CLONE AS A BENCHMARK FOR SPARKLING WINES<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the clones analyzed, RI12V23 stands out for its productive balance and grape quality.
