Alice Archer (UK), Owain Hughes (UK), Weiran Liu (China), Gabriella Macari (USA), Tiago Macena (Portugal), Jake Skakun (Canada), and Sue Tolson (Hungary) have passed all three stages of the MW exam.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the four new MWs announced in February, the 2026 class of new Masters of Wine now totals 11. <strong>This is the highest number since 2021<\/strong>, when 13 new MWs were appointed. The new class represents six countries. Among these are <strong>Portugal and Hungary<\/strong>, which join the map of countries with home-based Masters of Wine <strong>for the first time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-437b9a86\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">THE NEW MASTERS OF WINE<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the seven new entries announced, the number of active Masters of Wine <strong>reaches 427<\/strong>, spread across 31 countries. The title is awarded by the Institute of Masters of Wine to those who successfully complete all stages of the program.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The MW exam<\/strong> consists of three components, spread across the second and third stages of the study program. At the end of the second stage, candidates face a practical and a theoretical exam, both closed-book.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical exam includes three <strong>blind tasting<\/strong> sessions, each featuring 12 wines. Candidates must assess variety, origin, winemaking techniques, quality, style, and commercial positioning. The theoretical part comprises <strong>five papers<\/strong> dedicated to viticulture, winemaking, wine handling, the business of wine, and contemporary issues.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third stage involves the submission of a <strong>Research Paper<\/strong>, an original and in-depth study on a wine-related topic chosen from the sciences, arts, humanities, or social sciences. The Master of Wine title is awarded only after passing all three components.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ad07337e\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">ALICE ARCHER AND OWAIN HUGHES<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alice Archer MW<\/strong>, from the UK, specializes in Champagne and the fine wine sector. After graduating from Trinity Hall, Cambridge, she began her career at Cambridge Wine Merchants, handling en primeur campaigns, vintage assessments, producer relations, and the fine wine market.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has held senior roles in buying and sales at Mo\u00ebt Hennessy UK and Harrods. She is a judge for the International Wine Challenge and International Wine &amp; Spirit Competition, a past chair of the Champagne Academy, a member of the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne, and a Liveryman of the Vintners\u2019 Company.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her Research Paper focuses on the potential of using <strong>generative artificial intelligence<\/strong> to assist wineries in writing label descriptions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Owain Hughes MW<\/strong>, also British, discovered wine while studying music at the University of Bristol. He gained experience at Viader Vintners in Cardiff and during several harvests in the C\u00f4te de Nuits.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today he works in the financial sector, alongside selected consultancy work and judging in wine competitions. His Research Paper analyzes <strong>the relationship between wine and empire<\/strong> in the works of Conrad and Kipling, exploring the possibilities and limits of a postcolonial interpretation.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-92a61f75\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">WEIRAN LIU AND GABRIELLA MACARI<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Weiran &#8220;Bill&#8221; Liu MW <\/strong>was born in Shenzhen, China, and studied in the United States, earning a degree in international relations and French literature from Emory University.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His interest in wine, encouraged by his father, grew during an internship at Ch\u00e2teau Margaux while studying in France. He later worked in the fine and rare wine sector in Hong Kong, collaborating with international auction houses and wine clubs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today he lives in China&#8217;s Greater Bay Area and works in wine education, brand representation, consultancy, and international wine fairs. His work also includes promoting stronger connections between Chinese wines and the international wine community.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Research Paper examines <strong>factors influencing exhibitor preferences <\/strong>when choosing wine fairs in China.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gabriella Macari MW <\/strong>is an independent consultant and educator based in New York. Raised on her family&#8217;s estate on the North Fork of Long Island, she developed an interest in wine from a young age.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating from Fordham University, she began working in wine communication and education, collaborating with international brands and regional initiatives, including Wines from Spain and Mo\u00ebt Hennessy Wine Estates.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She then returned to Macari Vineyards, where she oversaw strategy, production, distribution, direct sales, and marketing. She is also the co-founder of Cab Franc Forward NY, an initiative dedicated to New York Cabernet Franc and regional identity through sustainable viticulture practices.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her Research Paper analyzes <strong>US wine consumer awareness, perspectives, and attitudes <\/strong>toward herbicides in viticulture.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-5a250fbe\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">TIAGO MACENA IS THE FIRST PORTUGUESE MASTER OF WINE<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tiago Macena MW <\/strong>is the first Portuguese Master of Wine. A graduate in agricultural engineering with a specialization in viticulture and enology from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon, he also holds a postgraduate specialization in Wine Business.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is a partner and winemaker at C\u00f3digo Wines in D\u00e3o and a consultant for wineries in Alentejo and Pico, Azores. His work focuses particularly on indigenous Portuguese varieties and the preservation of old vineyards.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macena is also a freelance educator, a member of the tasting panel for Revista de Vinhos, and a wine columnist.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Research Paper is <strong>dedicated to Encruzado in D\u00e3o<\/strong>, providing an analysis of production and future prospects for the variety.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-3b05ea29\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">JAKE SKAKUN AND SUE TOLSON<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jake Skakun MW<\/strong> is Canadian and works in Toronto as a restaurateur and wine director. After initial professional experience in multimedia and design, he entered the hospitality world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His passion for wine began while working in the Vancouver restaurant scene in the mid-2000s. In 2012, he moved to Toronto and subsequently helped open several restaurants, including Grey Gardens, Le Swan, Bar Vendetta, and General Public.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2020, he has managed the Grey Gardens Wine Club and handles high-profile clients for premium wine importer CGU Fine Wines.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Research Paper is <strong>a case study of Toronto-area wine buyers <\/strong>in the on-premise channel and the opportunities offered by VQA wine on tap.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sue Tolson MW<\/strong>, originally from England and living in Hungary, is the first Master of Wine based in the country. She works as a freelance writer, judge, educator, consultant, translator, and editor.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her work focuses on the wines of Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Italy. Her main interests include indigenous varieties, volcanic wines, and old vines.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tolson is a Vinitaly International Italian Wine Expert and contributes to publications such as Decanter, WineSofa, and Wines of Hungary. She regularly judges in Hungary and internationally, including at the International Wine Challenge, Wine Vision at Open Balkan, and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her Research Paper analyzes <strong>Szeksz\u00e1rd&#8217;s regional identity <\/strong>through the &#8220;Szeksz\u00e1rd Trinity&#8221;\u2014K\u00e9kfrankos, Kadarka, and Bikav\u00e9r\u2014and the role of the Szeksz\u00e1rd bottle.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-7dda7a31\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">THE CODE OF CONDUCT<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before using the Master of Wine title or the MW initials, all members must <strong>sign the Institute of Masters of Wine code of conduct<\/strong>. The document commits members to acting with honesty and integrity. This principle reflects the mission of the Institute of Masters of Wine, which aims to promote excellence, interaction, and learning in the wine world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the eleven total new entries in 2026, the Institute of Masters of Wine <strong>strengthens its international presence<\/strong>.
