After post-pandemic growth, 2025 closes with bottlings down 2.1% compared to 2024. In the first five months of 2026, the contraction continues, with a provisional decline of 5.4%. This picture emerges from the Valoritalia Annual Report 2026, presented in Rome at the Hotel Sina Bernini Bristol.

The report captures a sector under pressure due to falling international demand, evolving consumption habits, and market tensions. However, it also shows varying dynamics across categories, denominations, and production models. Higher value-added wines are holding steady. DOC and DOCG grew by about 1% in 2025, while IGTs lost 11%.

Positive trends also apply to sparkling, rosé, and still white wines. Sparkling wines grew by 1.7%, rosés by 5.7%, and still whites by 6.3%. Red wines, conversely, recorded a decline of over 13%. This data confirms a shift in consumer preferences, increasingly favoring white wines, bubbles, and products perceived as more versatile.

VALORITALIA CERTIFIES 219 DENOMINATIONS AND 18.7 MILLION HECTOLITERS

Valoritalia certifies 219 denominations of origin and over 60% of Italian appellation wines. In 2025, certified production reached 18.7 million hectoliters. There are 89,000 operators within the control system. Approximately 2 billion bottles are certified, with 1.37 billion state seals managed and a total certified wine value of 9.2 billion euros.

Control activities involved 50,000 wine samples subjected to chemical and organoleptic testing. There were 408,000 analytical determinations and 13,000 tasting commissions held. 98% of the samples were found suitable at the end of the verification procedures. Unsuitable samples accounted for 0.40%, while 1.60% were subject to review.

In 2025, 49,402 suitable samples were sent to analysis laboratories, an increase of 1.09% compared to 2024. The top 20 denominations accounted for 65% of the samples sent to tasting commissions. Prosecco DOC is the leading denomination by number of samples, with 7,811 submissions, followed by Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG with 3,594.

TESSA, THE VALORITALIA PLATFORM FOR WINE DATA

The highlight of the 2026 Annual Report is TESSA, the digital platform developed by Valoritalia with Microsoft and EOS. The tool integrates Business Intelligence systems and allows for real-time processing of data collected during certification processes.

The platform was created to transform certification into an operational knowledge tool. Every year, Valoritalia records about one million product movements. Each movement contains detailed information that multiplies the actual volume of managed data, bringing the information assets to tens of millions of data points.

TESSA allows for multi-level reporting. It can aggregate multiple denominations, analyze individual territories, or drill down into the details of certification phases. Protection Consortia will receive monthly reports, the media can rely on quarterly reports, and institutions will have access to data upon request.

The system allows Consortia to monitor samples, suitability, bottlings, bulk sales, declassifications, production, and stock levels. The goal is to reduce the information lag that limits decisions on supply management.

PROSECCO DOC IS THE TOP DENOMINATION BY BOTTLED VOLUME

In 2025, the total bottled volume certified by Valoritalia fell to 1.979 billion 0.75-liter equivalent bottles. The figure was 2.019 billion in 2024 and 2.063 billion in 2023. The decline is 2.01% compared to 2024 and 2.81% compared to the 2022-2024 average.

Concentration remains high. The 15 denominations with bottlings exceeding 150,000 hectoliters represent 81% of the national total certified by Valoritalia. Together, they account for 12.04 million hectoliters and 1.606 billion equivalent bottles.

Prosecco DOC leads the ranking with 5.044 million hectoliters bottled and 672.6 million equivalent bottles. It is followed by Delle Venezie DOC with 1.698 million hectoliters and 226.4 million bottles, Emilia IGT with 925,000 hectoliters and 123.3 million bottles, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG with 735,000 hectoliters and 98 million bottles, and Rubicone IGT with 650,000 hectoliters and 86.6 million bottles.

The 19 medium-sized denominations, between 50,000 and 150,000 hectoliters, account for another 10% of the total. In 2025, they bottled 1.46 million hectoliters, equal to 194.8 million equivalent bottles. The change compared to 2024 is positive: +2.4%.

DOC AND DOCG GROW, IGTs LOSE 11%

The breakdown by classification shows polarization. DOC wines went from 1.075 billion equivalent bottles in 2024 to 1.085 billion in 2025, an increase of 0.89%. DOCGs rose from 364.01 to 366.98 million bottles, a +0.81% increase.

IGTs, on the other hand, retreated from 451.76 to 401.30 million equivalent bottles. The decline is 11.17%. This figure explains much of the overall contraction in 2025.

In 2025, DOCs represent 58.6% of the bottled volume by classification. DOCGs account for 19.8%, while IGTs drop to 21.7%. The base of the quality pyramid is therefore more exposed to the reduction in demand.

WHITES AND SPARKLING WINES LEAD THE WAY, REDS IN DIFFICULTY

The dynamics by type confirm the shift in consumption. Still whites rose from 272.40 to 289.68 million equivalent bottles, an increase of 6.3%. Sparkling whites went from 896.06 to 911.11 million bottles, a +1.7% increase.

Rosés grew by 5.7%, although they remain marginal in overall volumes. Reds fell from 377.77 to 327.93 million equivalent bottles, a drop of 13.2%. Sparkling reds lost 1.3%.

The trend is also consistent with Nomisma data on the national market. In Italy, between 2015 and 2025, the share of sparkling wines in consumption rose from 10.5% to 15.1%. Still reds fell from 40.6% to 36.9%. Still whites remain the top category, with 40.2% of volumes in 2025.

Valoritalia 2026: Liantonio, Liberatore e Pantini leggono la crisi del vino italiano

MICRO-DENOMINATIONS MORE EXPOSED TO THE CRISIS

The Annual Report highlights a relationship between the size of the denomination and performance stability. Micro-denominations with bottlings under 10,000 hectoliters represent 70% of the 219 denominations certified by Valoritalia, but just 2% of the total bottled volume.

In 2025, this group recorded a contraction of 7.2%. Denominations between 50,000 and 150,000 hectoliters grew by 4%. Denominations over 150,000 hectoliters lost 1.7%, less than the general average.

The data indicates a structural fragility in smaller denominations. The lack of critical mass makes it harder to absorb market fluctuations, demand drops, and trade tensions.

PROTECTION CONSORTIA: THE TOP 14 COVER 83% OF VOLUMES

Concentration also affects the Protection Consortia. The top 14 Consortia with bottlings over 150,000 hectoliters cover 83% of the total certified by Valoritalia. In 2025, they recorded a 1.35% growth in bottlings.

The Prosecco DOC Protection Consortium leads the ranking with 5.044 million hectoliters bottled. It is followed by the Delle Venezie DOC Wine Consortium with 2.073 million hectoliters, the Emilia Wine Protection Consortium with 925,000 hectoliters, the Romagna Wine Protection Consortium with 746,000 hectoliters, and the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Wine Protection Consortium with 735,000 hectoliters.

The weight of the Consortia is also representative. On average, members represent 78% of the users of the denominations. The share exceeds 80% if denominations entrusted to the Regions and accounted for as non-associated are excluded.

CONSORTIA, DATA, AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE NEW EU FRAMEWORK

Protection Consortia also play a central role regarding the new European Regulation on Geographical Indications, which gives more space to voluntary sustainability tools. Consortia are called upon to coordinate businesses, territories, tourism operators, and institutions.

According to Nomisma, 47% of consumers identify the wine protection consortium as one of the entities that guarantee reliability and credibility to a wine certification. 41% cite an independent control or certification body, while 35% point to the producing company or winery.

Among the Consortia interviewed by Nomisma, all state they have already started or plan to start within 12 months a coordination process with local stakeholders, such as local authorities and tourism operators. More than half are also active in promoting tourism services linked to the PDO or PGI and in developing training projects for supply chain and tourism operators.

The issue is not just about communication. In a market phase marked by falling consumption, pressure on margins, and international instability, the availability of timely data becomes a management lever. Valoritalia aims to transform its information assets into a tool for Consortia, businesses, and institutions. The challenge will be to use this data to guide differentiated policies, regulate supply, and support the most fragile denominations without weakening the identity value of Italian wine.

BOTTLERS: FIVE COMPANIES ACCOUNT FOR NEARLY 19%

Valoritalia’s Business Intelligence also allows for measuring concentration among bottling companies. The top five companies cover nearly 19% of the total bottled volume. The top 40 exceed 55%.

This data coexists with a widespread supply chain. 75.4% of companies bottle a maximum of 500 hectoliters per year, which is about 67,000 bottles. Only 3.2% exceed 10,000 hectoliters, equivalent to over 1.3 million bottles.

The structure of Italian wine therefore remains dual. On one hand, a few companies and a few denominations concentrate most of the volumes. On the other, thousands of small and medium-sized companies safeguard territories, production identities, and enological biodiversity.

GINI INDEX AND CONCENTRATION: NORTH-EAST ABOVE PIEDMONT AND TUSCANY

The Annual Report also applies the Gini index to the concentration of bottlings. The value ranges from 0 to 1. The closer it is to 1, the greater the concentration. The index highlights high values in many denominations.

The highest concentrations are found in the North-East regions. Piedmont and Tuscany show lower values, although in many cases they remain at high levels. The data confirms that sector policies cannot be uniform. Differences between production areas, business models, and the weight of denominations require different tools.

WINE SUSTAINABILITY: NOMISMA FINDS DEMAND STILL HIGH

The Nomisma Wine Monitor study “Market Scenario and the Role of Sustainability for the Growth of Italian Wine,” presented by Denis Pantini, indicates that sustainability remains a relevant factor in consumer choices.

In food & wine, 68% of respondents consider sustainability very or fairly important. This figure has grown by 13 percentage points compared to 2020. 63% attribute importance to sustainable packaging, and 53% to the organic label.

In wine, 12% of consumers state they buy sustainable wine, an increase of 2 points compared to 2025. However, awareness remains uneven. The DOC label is known by 97% of consumers, organic by 93%, DOCG by 87%, and IGT by 83%. Equalitas-Sustainable reaches 45%, Demeter-Biodynamic 30%, VIVA-Sustainable 28%, and SQNPI-Integrated Pest Management 22%.

EQUALITAS: 76% OF CONSUMERS WOULD PAY MORE

Nomisma research indicates that consumers recognize added value in Equalitas certification. Compared to a conventional wine, an Equalitas-certified wine is perceived as superior in price by 62% of respondents, in environmental respect by 60%, in attention to the territory and local community by 55%, in safety and controls by 55%, and in corporate social responsibility by 51%.

76% of consumers say they are willing to spend more for a bottle of Equalitas-certified wine. 31% would accept a surcharge of up to 5%. 36% would pay 5% to 10% more, and 9% would go beyond 10%.

Sustainability is interpreted across three dimensions: product, company, and territory. For the product, the absence of herbicides and the limitation of pesticides are most important. For the company, reducing waste, reusing scraps, and lower energy and water consumption carry weight. For the territory, protection of natural areas, biodiversity, and monitoring of pesticides, fertilizers, water consumption, and waste are relevant.

SUSTAINABLE ENOTOURISM: ONE IN THREE ITALIANS HAS TAKEN A WINE-THEMED VACATION

Nomisma also highlights the role of enotourism. 38% of Italians have taken at least one wine-themed vacation in the last two or three years. The turnover derived from enotourism for Italian wine companies is estimated at 3.1 billion euros. The average contribution of enotourism to company turnover is 21%.

66% of Italians consider sustainability important when choosing a holiday destination, an increase of 3 points compared to 2025. 51% of wine consumers would pay more for a trip or excursion to a winery certified for sustainable tourism. Among enotourists, this share rises to 68%.

The most attractive denominations show results above regional averages. Between 2019 and 2024, tourist arrivals in the municipalities of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG grew by 39%, those of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG by 33%, and those of Bolgheri DOC by 28%. In Veneto, Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG recorded +26.5% and Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG +21.2%.

Italian wine is entering a period of adjustment.
