Among e-commerce platforms, Amazon represents one of the most discussed for its commercial potential and the limitations imposed by alcohol regulations. This article analyzes the current situation of wine sales on Amazon in Italy and Europe, clarifying rules, opportunities, and critical issues for those operating in the wine sector.<br\/>THE ALCOHOL CATEGORY AND ACCESS FOR SELLERS<br\/>Amazon does not sell wine directly as a retailer. The platform offers a marketplace where third-party sellers can offer alcoholic products, including wine, subject to approval by Amazon itself. To be able to list bottles in the catalog, a seller must request access to the &#8220;Beer, Wine and Spirits&#8221; category through Amazon Seller Central.<br\/>Approval is not automatic: Amazon verifies the seller&#8217;s legal requirements and experience, and it is possible that some requests may be rejected or require additional documentation. The sale of alcohol is considered sensitive due to legal liability and the application of regulations governing distance selling of age-restricted products.<br\/>LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND OBLIGATIONS FOR WINE SALES<br\/>Those selling wine on Amazon must comply with both the marketplace&#8217;s internal rules and national and European regulations governing alcohol. This means, first and foremost, being compliant with VAT registration, Chamber of Commerce registration, SCIA, and appropriate ATECO codes for the sale of alcoholic beverages.<br\/>In Italy and the EU, online wine sales also require the management of excise duties and related tax obligations. The platform reaches millions of customers in Europe and worldwide, with advertising and positioning tools that can help increase sales and raise awareness of lesser-known labels.<br\/>For wine producers, listing on Amazon can represent an opportunity for expansion into foreign markets without the need for their own distribution structures. Amazon&#8217;s e-commerce infrastructure simplifies payments, orders, and customer service, while presence in search results and product recommendations can increase visibility compared to a proprietary e-shop.<br\/>CRITICAL ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS OF THE MARKETPLACE MODEL<br\/>The main critical issues for those selling wine on Amazon are regulatory, operational, and competitive in nature. The rules on alcohol sales require specific compliance measures that are not necessary for unregulated products. Fees and logistics costs can reduce margins, especially for small wineries.<br\/>Furthermore, the marketplace system can generate price pressure: consumers on Amazon tend to quickly compare offers and shipping costs, pushing toward more competitive pricing at the expense of the perceived value of wine. Managing online reviews and end-customer expectations requires attention and appropriate strategies.<br\/>COMPARISON WITH OTHER ONLINE SALES CHANNELS<br\/>Compared to wine companies&#8217; direct e-commerce sites, Amazon offers scale but also greater constraints. A proprietary e-shop allows full control of the purchasing experience and building a direct relationship with the customer, but requires investments in technology, marketing, and logistics. Amazon, on the other hand, provides ready-made infrastructure, with distributed costs but also rigid rules and high market standards.<br\/>FUTURE PROSPECTS<br\/>Amazon&#8217;s role in the wine market remains a subject of attention. The platform could adjust its policies to facilitate the entry of alcoholic products or to integrate dedicated services, but it will always have to deal with national and European regulations that are difficult to standardize.
