And they <strong>would appreciate greater transparency<\/strong>, especially regarding &#8220;<strong>wine ingredients<\/strong>.&#8221; This is what emerges from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/questionario-presenza-saccarosio-vini-quanto-conosci-vino-che-bevi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>survey conducted by Federmosti in collaboration with Winemag.it<\/strong><\/a> and its readers. The results reveal an increasingly strong demand for <strong>clarity on wine labels<\/strong>. Since December 2023, thanks to the new electronic labeling system, consumers can access\u2014via QR Code\u2014the complete list of ingredients present in wine bottles.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But is it really enough? According to the results of the Federmosti-Winemag.it survey, the answer is no: consumers want even more transparency. Let&#8217;s look in detail at the questions posed to an international audience.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Would you prefer the information on sucrose and concentrated musts to be on the physical label?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes: 50.6%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No: 49.4%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The split is evident: half of the participants ask for the presence of sucrose to be clearly indicated on the label.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the comments:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCertainly, visible transparency above all else\u201d<br\/>\u201cIt is an ingredient and it is only right that it goes in the ingredients list\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Did you know that wine is not always made 100% from grapes and grape musts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes: 86.4%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No: 13.6%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most respondents are already informed, but some comments still reveal surprise:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wonder what other elements they add to make wine!\u201d<br\/>\u201cIf it is not the product of fermented grapes, it is not wine\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Did you know that in Central European countries wine can be enriched with sucrose, while in Italy only with concentrated must?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes: 83.1%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No: 16.9%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practice of enrichment with sucrose, considered traditional and permitted in France, is known by most consumers who participated in the survey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the comments:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven here in Italy many companies do it&#8230;\u201d<br\/>\u201cI thought it happened everywhere\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Do you think that knowing the wine ingredients, particularly the presence of sucrose, could influence the purchasing choice?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes: 105 responses (68.2%)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No: 49 responses (31.8%)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear majority wants to know what will be in the glass before buying a bottle.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA wine with sucrose present is certainly of mediocre quality.\u201d<br\/>\u201cThe presence of other additives, however, could influence me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Would you find it useful to be able to read phrases like &#8220;does not contain sucrose&#8221; on the label?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes: 68.2%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No: 31.8%<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data shows a line consistent with previous answers: knowing in order to choose consciously.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are also those who raise reservations:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt could be misleading by \u2018ennobling\u2019 wines that are not deserving.\u201d<br\/>\u201cIt would only be a further push to believe that one can drink more of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b915fa00\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong><strong>SUCROSE IN WINE, FEDERMOSTI: &#8220;OUR COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY REWARDED&#8221;<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Marco Bertagni<\/strong>, president of <strong>Federmosti<\/strong>, says he is &#8220;very satisfied with the survey results.&#8221; &#8220;They demonstrate,&#8221; he comments, &#8220;how deeply the need for transparency is felt. Knowing if a wine contains sucrose can truly <strong>influence purchasing choices<\/strong>. It is not just a matter of labeling, but of <strong>food culture and respect for the consumer<\/strong>.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe positive response to the key question of the survey\u2014whether information on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/indicazione-del-contenuto-zuccherino-in-etichetta-federmosti-torna-alla-carica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presence of sucrose in wine<\/a><\/strong> affects purchasing decisions\u2014confirms a conviction we have always held,\u201d concludes Bertagni. Supporting this intuition are the data: <strong>nearly 70% of respondents answered affirmatively<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-related-links yoast-seo-related-links\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/questionario-presenza-saccarosio-vini-quanto-conosci-vino-che-bevi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Questionnaire on the presence of sucrose in wines: how well do you know the wine you drink?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/indicazione-del-contenuto-zuccherino-in-etichetta-federmosti-torna-alla-carica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indication of sugar content on the label: Federmosti returns to the fray<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/critiche-nuova-etichettatura-vini-ue-ingredienti-esultano-federmosti-must\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New EU wine labeling and ingredients, not just criticism: Federmosti and MUST celebrate<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/etichettatura-vino-ue-cambia-regole-al-90-qr-code-non-basta-insorgono-produttori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wine labeling, EU changes rules at the 11th hour: QR code is not enough, producers protest<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.it\/chilocalorie-kcal-etichetta-vino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Calories (kcal) on the wine label: open debate<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a strong signal,\u201d the president of Federmosti further emphasizes, \u201cthat recognizes <strong>years of work to ensure clear and transparent information<\/strong>, without passing judgment on traditional practices adopted in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the journey, he warns, is not yet over. \u201cWe are only halfway there. The true goal,\u201d Marco Bertagni concludes, \u201cwill be achieved when consumers worldwide are able to <strong>read and correctly interpret the new labels<\/strong>. We will continue to promote them, also collaborating with associations historically by our side, starting with <strong>Federconsumatori<\/strong>, as part of the <em><strong>In vino veritas<\/strong><\/em> project.\u201d   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wine consumers want to know what they are drinking.
